Khun Road Seeks to Solve Ecosystem Issues in Mongolia

Khun Road Seeks to Solve Ecosystem Issues in Mongolia

Apr 18, 2022

There are major issues with the way we are currently consuming and producing.

  • The fashion industry is amongst the top environmental polluters, contributing to 10% of humanities carbon emissions (that’s more than all the international flights & maritime shipping combines), dries up water sources (93 billion cubic meters of water, enough to meet the needs of 5 million people), as well as massively polluting in natural bodies of water with dumping of chemicals, dyes, and polluting micro plastics (around 20% of industrial water waste pollution worldwide originates from the fashion industry). (UNECE,2018)
  • 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year, and the washing of certain types of clothes sends significant amounts of micro plastics into the oceans. (UNECE, 2018). 60% of all materials used by fashion industry are made from plastics (UNEP, 2019).
  • Fast fashion also has a human cost: textile workers, primarily women in developing countries, are often paid derisory wages and forced to work long hours in appalling conditions. In many places, these conditions create infringements on human rights. (UNEP, 2018)
  • There is an eco-system issue in Mongolia that we wish to help solve.  By buying cashmere we are helping the farmers to continue maintaining the fertility of their soil.  Mongolia has been losing their battle to maintain fertile fields from which to grow.  We want to help, and we get to go after two birds with one stone.  We are spurring both economic activity and helping the Mongolians save their ecosystem.
  • Plastic products contain chemical additives, yes even clothing A number of these chemicals have been associated with serious health problems such as hormone-related cancers, infertility and neurodevelopment disorders such as ADHD and Autism. (*Plastic Health Coalition)

Through our eco-friendly model of thoughtfully supporting the earth, we are sustainably creating compassionate clothing. Inspired by the indigenous ways of Mongolian Nomadic living, we source all our natural fabrics with love and respect for the animals and the earth. We create our cashmere and wool products from what naturally is collected through the seasonal shedding/combing of goats and sheep. All other fabrics we use are found in used fabric warehouses stored in Mongolia and repurposed through our seasonal clothing collections.

Our vision is to provide exceptional products that bring direct benefit to the communities we work with and to design our products with such quality and style that will compare with designer brands around the world but at half the price.  We aim to expertly manage our business with the goal of running a heart warming company with a business multiple of three(3x).

Utilizing our direct relationships with the communities we work with, we believe we can pay fair prices for materials and production that provides healthy economic growth and still drive enough cost efficiency with smart and stylish designs that are easily identifiable as high-end.  Ultimately, we believe we will be able to build a brand which is known for high quality products with sensational style, which will make our customers compassionately smile.

With a business multiple of three as our target, each sale of our product will help accelerate our business organically.  We also foresee an opportunity to benefit from maintaining direct relationships with the communities we co-create with, and serve.  While we will seek fundraising at the appropriate times, ultimately we see the potential to create a compassionate company that will generate a sustainable difference in areas that need it the most.
